Fake news. Ce ne rezerva viitorul ?

O analiza interesanta despre viitorul fake-news-urilor in articolul What Advertising History Says About the Future of Fake News. Austan Goolsbee face o analogie cu istoria advertisingului si are o concluzie optimista.

“First, in all likelihood, fake news will spread, despite efforts to rein it in. So far, most attention has focused on efforts to meddle in American elections. That is no small threat.

Yet, based on the historical record, far more effort goes into persuading Americans to buy things than to elect politicians.

[…]

As technology develops, the same wearout effect is likely to occur with advertising based on fake news. As we are inundated with new, targeted, deceptive ads, we may get sick of them and, perhaps, stop finding them persuasive. For now, it’s the best hope we have.”

Hiawatha Bray scrie in Boston Globe Online pe aceasta tema Can fake news go the way of spam?

“Remember spam? Once upon a time, billions of fraudulent messages were supposed to make our e-mail systems virtually useless. But spam filters have become so good, we now almost never seen them, even though spammers send more messages than ever.

“It’s a manageable disease,” said John Reed, a researcher at Spamhaus, an international spam-fighting organization.

Fake news is probably destined for the same fate. While Facebook and Google are scrambling to fend off another wave of phony political stories, they will probably never be completely eradicated.”

Combating fake news: A survey on identification and mitigation techniques. Ithaca: Cornell University Library, arXiv.org

“ In this survey, we describe the modern-day problem of fake news and, in particular, highlight the technical challenges associated with it. We discuss existing methods and techniques applicable to both identification and mitigation, with a focus on the significant advances in each method and their advantages and limitations. In addition, research has often been limited by the quality of existing datasets and their specific application contexts. To alleviate this problem, we comprehensively compile and summarize characteristic features of available datasets. Furthermore, we outline new directions of research to facilitate future development of effective and interdisciplinary solutions.”

Despre acest aspect al problemei de a ne trezi ca legea va facilita aparitia unei categorii de fake news reglementate si protejate prin lege puteti citi in articolul lui  Herbert Grubel – Regulating fake news will only ensure that we only see regulated fake news. (2018)

„We should expect the same from any proposed agencies charged with the objective task of suppressing fake news. For these reasons, it seems better to prevent the likely small cost of fake news by relying on the common sense of the common people rather than rely on the decisions of a few employees of government agencies.”
